Job Title: Laboratory Technologist
Job Location: Child Hospital, Cox’s Bazar Sadar.
Reports to: Medical Coordinator.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Lab Technologist is responsible for overseeing laboratory activities at Save the Children’s Health operations in Cox’s Bazar Child Hospital. This includes delivering high-quality lab services to the assigned population, ensuring proper vaccine storage and handling, maintaining accurate records. The role also involves collaborating with health teams to ensure coverage of all lab services among community. The position also will be responsible for laboratory testing, maintain quality assurance, support in the laboratory activities, and maintain accurate records and reporting systems, maintaining lab equipment as per SOP, periodic calibration, logbook maintaining etc. Additionally, the incumbent coordinates with other medical teams, supports SCI health programs in the targeted community, and engages with other humanitarian actors and local authorities to ensure the effective implementation of laboratory activities in the healthcare system.
Key activities will include:
• The laboratory technologist will be responsible for performing routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, as well as providing information and advice to patients prior to specimen collection.
He/she will also oversee the blood bank, ensure the correct collection and storage of blood components, as well as perform the pertinent studies of the blood to guarantee its adequate quality
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
1. Diagnostic Testing and Analysis:
• Perform, verify, and validate a broad spectrum of automated and manual tests in various disciplines, including hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).
• Ensure proper collection, labelling, processing, and storage of specimens following SOPs and biosafety standards.
• Evaluate specimen acceptability and apply critical thinking to troubleshoot anomalous results.
• Correlate and verify laboratory data to identify discrepancies, inconsistencies, and pathological states.
• Perform and document quality control procedures to ensure the precision and accuracy of all test results.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of test results and communicate findings promptly to clinical teams.
• Maintain laboratory reagents, consumables, and equipment to ensure continuous service delivery.
2. Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments and analyzers.
• Perform routine and complex maintenance and troubleshoot instrument malfunctions.
• Document all maintenance, calibration, and corrective actions taken.
• Maintain cold chain and temperature monitoring logs for reagents, vaccines, and specimens.
3. Quality Assurance and Compliance:
• Adhere strictly to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines, including HIPAA regulations.
• Implement and maintain internal quality control (IQC) procedures and participate in external quality assurance (EQA) schemes when applicable and proficiency testing programs.
• Ensure the laboratory complies with all regulatory standards.
• Maintain detailed and accurate records of all tests performed and results reported.
• Ensure strict adherence to biosafety, biosecurity, and IPC guidelines.
• Comply with all laboratory policies and SC/MG standards related to safety, cleanliness and infection
control.
• Respect biosafety measures adopted in the laboratory, ensuring the safety of self and others.
4. Technical Expertise and Problem-Solving:
• Exercise independent judgment to interpret test results and correlate them with clinical data.
• Recognize critical values and follow established protocols for immediate notification to physicians.
• Assist in the validation and implementation of new test methods, procedures, and equipment.
• Provide technical guidance and training to laboratory assistants and other staff.
5. Blood Bank Responsibilities:
• Perform blood grouping and typing, antibody screening and identification, and crossmatching of blood products.
• Issue compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, adhering to strict protocols.
• Ensure that the blood transfusion process is carried out properly following WHO and SCI/MG
protocols.
6. Data Management and Reporting
• Maintain laboratory registers, inventory logs, and digital reporting tools.
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly laboratory reports and submit them to the facility in-charge or program coordinator.
• Track consumption of supplies, forecast future needs, and initiate timely requisitions to avoid stock-outs.
7. Communication and Collaboration:
• Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding test results, specimen requirements, and laboratory services.
• Maintain a collaborative and professional relationship with all members of the healthcare team.
8. General:
• Support emergency outbreak responses (e.g., cholera, dengue, diphtheria) by establishing appropriate diagnostic protocols.
• Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation, disinfection, and disposal as per national IPC guidelines.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor or line manager.
• Ensure that all laboratory procedures with patients are conducted in a dignified and proper
manner, in accordance with the standards and principles established by Save the Children/MedGlobal Inc.
• Ensure that systems are in place to strictly maintain patient confidentiality.
• Ensure that patient records and medical records are completed in accordance with Save the
Children/MedGlobal Inc and country Ministry of Health requirements.
• Ensure the use of established reporting formats for the request and delivery of laboratory test
results following SC/MG and Field Hospital protocols.
• Provide information and education to patients when performing laboratory specimen collection.
• Support clinical orientation and training of national staff.
• Document and report any medical incidents or near misses according to Save the Children/MedGlobal
International procedures (using the Kobo/Datix system or manual reporting).
• Comply with Save the Children/MedGlobal policies and practices relating to child protection, code of
conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.
Educational Qualification:
Diploma in Medical Technology (Laboratory).BSC in Health Technology (Laboratory) or Similar discipline with valid registration under State Medical Faculty in Bangladesh Experience and Skills Requirements:
Working Experience:
• At least 2 years of clinical experience in Laboratory Operations and Blood Transfusion System.
• Experience with blood bank management and point of care testing
• Willingness and ability to travel as required. as guided by the Medical Coordinator (MC)
Job related Knowledge:
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team, under pressure and in a sensitive environment, some experience in or understanding of the health sector
• Ability to work under extreme circumstances, including under stress, high security risks and harsh living conditions. Works and lives with a flexible, adaptable and resilient manner.

Skills:

DESIRABLE:
• Previous experience of NGO work in humanitarian settings. Experience of working in a district hospital or higher level of care in the laboratory services.
• Relevant experience working as a phlebotomist in a hospital or high activity laboratory. Certified training on good laboratory practice (GLP)
• Proficiency in Rohingya or Chittagong local language. Strong knowledge of MedGlobal systems and ways of working
Attitude:

Working Conditions:
• Works in a clinical laboratory environment with frequent exposure to biological specimens, chemicals, and odors.
• May involve prolonged periods of standing and working at a bench. Requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, evenings, or on-call shifts to provide 24/7 laboratory coverage.
Networking: (5% of time) Visit local Govt. admin authorities, NGOs/INGOs and stakeholders, with the prior permission of MC to build rapport and understanding Refer patients in higher facility as necessary
Others: (5% of time) Attend in-house and outside training as directed by the MC . Keep work station neat, clean and tidy at all times. Work in close liaison with the MC and submit periodical reports. Attend meetings as directed by the MC.
